Christmas Stuff Christmas is over. Hooray! I'm so glad it only comes once a year. I couldn't stand it any more often... or afford it. Daryl got me a new Mercedes Lackey book I wanted, the last Enya CD that came out, and one of those "Lucky Bamboo" plants that are in a little pot with stones and water in it and three bamboo plants tied together. My mother, in a huge labor of love, cross-stitched two absolutely beautiful Feng-Shui pictures. One is longevity and the other is balance. She said she worked on it every night for three months... each. And then my parents took them and had them professionally framed. When I unwrapped them, I could've sworn that she bought them, they were that perfect. My dad, in another labor of love, took a table he had bought at a yard sale that was pretty sad looking and took it apart, got all the glue off it that some guy used to try to glue it back together, sanded it down, put it back together and put layers of varnish on it until it shined. My mom said he worked hours on it. It's truly beautiful. There's just something to be said for real furniture. Real being furniture that isn't made from pressed wood pulp or something. So far I've gotten a bookcase, an over the toilet, floor to ceiling cabinet and shelf thing that I can't recall the name of, and this table that my dad has built for me.
Words and Phrases That Shouldn't Exist There are a couple of phrases that I get so sick of hearing, especially at work, that I could scream. The first one is "You know what I'm saying," usually said as "y'know what'm sayin'," and inserted in the middle of or at the end of sentances or phrases, pretty much indiscriminately, y'know what'm sayin'? The other one is "Girl" or "Girlfriend," said in a long drawn out manner with a rising inflection toward the end and with an air of "Oh, I feel your pain" added in and perhaps a "Mmmm" in front of it. Generally said when it seems as if any other comment would take too much effort.
Example: "I think I'm going to go to McDonald's for lunch." "Mmmm, girrrrrlllll."
"My boyfriend left me yesterday." "Mmmm, girlfriend."
"I think aliens abducted me and conducted experiments on me last night." "Mmmm, girrrrrlllll."
I so need a new job...

Comments With my husband's help, the comments now work. I know from looking in the directory the comments are stored in that no one has tried to leave any comments, because all the test comments I left were there, but no others. Come on. I know people are looking at my page. The counter keeps going up. My husband gets comments on his page... why not mine? Give it a try. You might like it.

Video Card Well, looks like I won't be playing EQ for a while. After talking to four different tech support people on the phone, and playing e-mail tag with them when I wasn't on the phone, my video card remains unfixed. We tried old drivers, new drivers, reinstalling DirectX, changing the IRQ ports... nothing has worked. I'm either going to have to keep playing with my onboard card, or take it to a shop like Best Buy or the computer store down the street to see if there's anything I can do.
Yet more money spent on a stupid game. I'm thinking about giving it up for a while. I'm spending money I can't afford. Maybe I'll try a new game or something.
Christmas My mother gave me an early Christmas present today. A beautiful table that my dad made. He spent a lot of time on it. She gave it to us early because I needed a table for our fiber optic Christmas tree. Merry Christmas to us!

More About Cars I'm on the phone holding for tech support and a call comes in on call waiting. It's my mother. "I need you to come with me." "Come with you where?" "Your father's been in an accident and I want you to come with me." She's going to come get me she says. So I start pulling on my shoes and getting ready to go. She didn't tell me if he was okay, so at this point I'm pretty freaked out.
He's okay. His car is pretty bad. Somebody stopped in the middle of the road and caused a three car pile-up, which, of course, the idiot that stopped in the middle of the road was not involved in. He or she is long gone. Everyone was okay. One of the ladies in the middle car was pregnant. My dad has a big bruise on his tummy where he hit the steering wheel, even though the air bags came out, and a cut on his hand from the air bags. Once he found out everyone was okay, I think he was most upset about his car. It was a nice car. A nice Lincoln Continental, white with red leather interior. He still owes two years on it. The guys at the body shop said the frame might not be bent, so maybe they can fix it.

Christmas Spirit I was driving around the major shopping area closest to my home, trying to get to and from school today, and I was struck by the abundance of the Christmas spirit I saw everywhere... or perhaps I should specifiy the lack of the Christmas spirit. The "me first" attitude is in overwhelming abundance everywhere I turn, manifesting itself a great deal in peoples driving manners. You definitely need to be on the defensive during this time of year. People cut in front of you without turn signals, or pull out in front of you with little room to spare so you must slam on your brakes.. and you might as well pretend yield signs are non-existant, because they may as well be. Christmas... bah humbug.
Tech Support I'm on the phone right now with EQ tech support... or rather, on the machine that tells me to hold every two minutes. The hold music is kinda lame by the way. I think they're just toying with me and making me hold for no reason, in the hopes that I'll hang up and they won't have to deal with anyone. Not to mention ringing up all the minutes on my cell phone that I'm calling with. Again I say, bah humbug.

More EQ Problems Big surprise, eh? Well, my husband saved up and gave me the money to buy a new video card for a Christmas present since I've been having problems with EQ using my onboard video card. We went and got a GeForce 2 MX400 with 64 onboard memory and put it in... and surprise, surprise, the same problem I was having with my old video card, a 3D Prophet II MX. The screen looks cut up and garbeled, and the mouse leaves little trails whenever I move it that fill up the screen. And I'm not going through the hassle of taking the card back out so I can play tonight, since I'm going to try to call tech support tomorrow. I tried calling tonight and got a busy signal for about an hour. I tried calling until the time they closed for the day with no luck.
So tell me, with all the grief I get from EQ and all the money I have and continue to invest in it, why do I bother?

Another Poem I wrote a free-verse poem a while back, it was before September 11th, and I never got around to putting it up in my poem section. So until then, here it is.
I'm Tired
I'm tired of the hypocrisy of those who are so sure they are better than you;
I'm tired of big guys beating up on the little guys... just because they can;
I'm tired of the stupid;
I'm tired of the ignorant;
I'm tired of the close-minded;
I'm tired of those who are so sure that they are right, and I'm not;
I'm tired of people who won't even consider that maybe I'm right, too;
I'm tired of people thinking that walls and ceilings and possessions are more important than trees and sky and people;
I'm tired of those who put money and profit margins above people's well being;
I'm tired of working at a dead-end job for a company I hate with people I can't respect just because I don't have a degree yet so I must not be qualified for anything better, right?
I'm tired of going to school with people that don't realize how wonderful it is to be educated;
I'm tired of people not realizing just how lucky they are;
I'm tired of seeing people that take advantage of others make it big while the nice guys struggle to get by;
I'm tired of people thinking chivalry is dead and that being polite is pointless;
I'm tired of people catering to the lowest common denominator because it's easier than making the standards higher;
I'm tired of people not being able to have rights unless they can afford a lawyer to defend them;
I'm tired of people putting God in a box, instead of realizing that God is bigger than any box;
I'm tired of racism, greed, selfishness, antagonism, condescention, smugness, intolerance, bigotry, and jealousy
But most of all...
I'm just tired.
But First, A Po-em Here's a poem my husband wrote about Christmas. It's the most wonderful time of the year, heh.
It's Christmas time, it's Christmas time
And once again we hear
From all around, the saccharine sound
Of imitation cheer
As one more time we brace ourselves
For what we're going to face
It's an obscene commercial scheme
A national disgrace
We gather 'round our families
With all our petty rifts
Assaulting one another
With retalliatory girfts
You fake a grin at Auntie Gwen
Suspecting you'll recieve...
For goodness sake! The same fruitcake
You gave last Christmas Eve!
The trendy toys are over-priced
But still you'll buy them all
And as you get submerged in debt
Down at the shopping mall
You'll be polite to pompous jerks
You know you prob'ly will
And deep inside, you'll try to hide
The urge to kill, kill, KILL!
EverQuest: The Saga Continues I finally was able to get the patches downloaded. I tried to play EQ, and guess what, my video card still doesn't work. So I am stuck with using my onboard card still. And since it doesn't have any onboard memory, I had to share memory with it, which reduces my available RAM... so I can't see any of the character models. Everything is really laggy, and its driving me batty. Time to visit pricewatch.com for some more memory. I've been told I look hot though.

EverQuest I bought the new expansion for EQ today. I'm sure it'll be fun... when I eventually get it to work. I went to the local Best Buy to pick it up, went back to the Computer Games section, and looked at the EverQuest section... and no Shadows of Luclin. So I found a sales person and asked her if they had it. She promptly told me, in utter seriousness "It's not available in stores. You have to order it online." Well, you and I both know that's a load of crap. EQ fans everywhere have been waiting for today and were at the stores as soon as they opened to buy it. I told her it was due to come out today, and she just repeated what she had told me. So I said okay and left... and went to Media Play. As soon as I walked in, there was a display with a huge stack of the expansion, and even though it was marked 29.99, it rang up 24.99. Oh well, if Best Buy doesn't want my money, screw 'em.
You know, with all the problems and frustration EQ gives me, sometimes I wonder why I bother. But, despite myself, I still have spent 20 dollars on the original EQ, 40 on Kunkar, 20 on Velious, and another 30 on the new expansion today. Plus the 10 dollar a month fee over the past two years. And don't forget memory upgrades and a new video card just so I could play EQ better, faster, longer. And, of course, there's the patches. Always the patches. Patches are the bane of my existence with a dial-up modem. Every time there's a major patch, it takes me hours to get it downloaded because my puny little connection isn't able to bully itself into the stream of people trying to download the same thing at the same time. Not to mention the endless problems I have every time they decide to upgrade to a newer version of Direct X.
Today, as all EQers will know, is the "big day". The new expansion, Shadows of Luclin came out today. And so did a major huge patch. So far my patch program is either getting stuck on "Connecting" or "Checking for Updated Files, please wait." After that, it won't do anything, if I'm lucky... if I'm not, it crashes.
If I don't get a fix soon, I'm going into withdrawal.

EverQuest My druid on EQ, Willowsong, finally got to 51 about a week ago. Now I've been working on my epic quest, but the prospects aren't looking so great. I've done most of what I can do by myself, but I don't know if I'm going to be able to organize raids big enough to kill some of the really hard things that need to be killed. Oh well, one step at a time I suppose.
On a side note, the damage done to my car was estimated at around 2100 dollars by the insurance adjustor. My car was taken to the shop Thursday and I should get it back by Wednesday. Until then I'm driving a fun little Pontiac Grand Am.

Bads News, Good News, & More Bad News Wow, it sure has been a long time since I've added to my own website. Which brings to my mind the question "Why should I add to my website when no one else does?" But then, it's my site, right? But I digress. As I said in the header, I have bad news, good news, and more bad news. So first, the bad news. My computer blew up. Well, not in a flaming ball of fire or anything interesting like that, but some of the chips blew out on the motherboard and the power supply went out. For no apparent reason. So now, the good news. I got a new computer. It's a lot nicer than the one I had, which was really old and had been rebuilt a couple of times. And I was able to take out the RAM, the old hard drive, and my Hercules video card and put in the new one (thus invalidating the warranty... oops).
And now for the rest of the bad news. I wrecked my car again. It wasn't totally my fault, and I didn't get a ticket, which is a good thing. And no one was hurt... another good thing. I was driving up I-65, and traffic was at a crawl, as usual. I was speeding up from being at a near-stop when the car in front of me, two car lengths in front of me I think, slammed on her brakes. She was following her friend, who was driving the car in front of her. The friend had to slam on her brakes because the guy in front of her had no brake lights. The lady in front of me was able to stop and I should have been also, I had plenty of room. But when I slammed on my brakes, they must've locked up. The car didn't slow down and I skidded all the way into the car in front of me. I didn't want to hit her full on, and I managed to steer my car as close to the concrete wall on the left as I could so the front right of my car hit the back left of her car. She had a scratched up bumper... my car shattered into pieces. Stupid plexiglass vehicles. Her car needs a new rear bumper... my car neeeds a new bumper, grill, hood, headlight assembly, side panel above the wheel. Hooray for insurance.

Butt Monkeys! This message was posted to a mailing list I'm on shortly after the terrorist attacks. It made me laugh out loud. Something my husband had me listen to earlier today made me think of it, and I wanted to post it on my website.
It still makes me giggle whenever I hear the word "terrorists" and mentally replace it with "butt monkeys".
I think we need a new word besides "terrorists". I think it gives them too much power and credit over the victims. Maybe we should call them the "butt monkeys" or something. No one can be too proud to say they were a butt monkey for their country. Can you imagine their mothers grieving? "He was such a good butt monkey".

An Open Letter to the Youngest Victims of the Terrorist Attacks This is an open letter from Kathie Scobee Fulgham. She is the daughter of Dick Scobee, commander of the Space Shuttle Challenger on its final mission, Jan. 28, 1986. She lives in Chattanooga, Tenn., with her husband and four children. You can reach her at Kathie_Scobee@email.com. I actually heard this letter being read on the radio, and was quite touched by it.
Dear children,
The thunderous explosions that rocked the whole world have shattered yours.
Why does the TV show the crashing plane, exploding and collapsing buildings over and over? Where is my mom or dad? Why can't the rescuers find him/her? Who could have done this terrible thing? Why is the whole nation crying?
Yours is a small voice in a crashing storm of questions arising from an act of war on the American people. But no answers will bring you comfort. And no answers will bring you closer to understanding, save one: Your mom or dad was in harm's way.
While our great nation bulks up for the first fight of the century, we, the Challenger children and all the children of public disasters, are hearing your hearts break, holding your hands and hugging you from afar. You are not alone. We want you to know that it will be bad — very bad — for a little while, but it will get better.
You see, 15 years ago, before some of you were even born, I watched my father and his crew die in a horrible accident. Our loved ones were astronauts on board the Space Shuttle Challenger, which blew up a few minutes after take off. It all happened on live television. It should have been a moment of private grief, but instead it turned into a very public torture.
We couldn't turn on the television for weeks afterward, because we were afraid we would see the gruesome spectacle of the Challenger coming apart a mile up in the sky. My father died a hundred times a day on televisions all across the country.
And since it happened so publicly, everyone in the country felt like it happened to them too. And it did. The Challenger explosion was a national tragedy. Everyone saw it, everyone hurt, everyone grieved, everyone wanted to help. But that did not make it any easier for me. They wanted to say good-bye to American heroes. I just wanted to say good-bye to my daddy.
Our nation mourns with you, for itself and for you. But yours is also a personal loss that is separate from this national tragedy. We hope this letter will bring you some comfort now or in the future, when you are strong enough and old enough to read it. We want to prepare you for what's to come and to help you deal with this burden you never asked to bear.
No one asked the people in the World Trade Center, in the Pentagon, or on the airplanes to give their lives in a war they had never volunteered to fight, against people they did not even know were plotting their deaths. Your mom or dad was innocent. They were just doing their jobs or traveling to see friends or family, but someone decided to make their everyday lives — and yours — a battlefield.
You've discovered by now that you won't be able to escape the barrage of news and the countless angles of investigation, speculation and exasperation. The 24-hour coverage will ebb and flow, but will blindside you in the weeks, months and years to follow when you least expect it. You will be watching television and then, suddenly, there will be those pictures — the plane, the towers, the cloud of dust, the fires, the people running. For other people watching, this will all be something called "history." To you, it's your life.
Just know that the media and public perception of this catastrophe aren't the same as yours. They can't know how painful it is to watch your mom or dad die several times each day. If they knew how much pain it caused, they would stop.
You imagine death like it is in a fairy tale or like at Grandma or Grandpa's funeral. They look asleep and peaceful in their coffins. Their earthly bodies are tangible and recognizable. You can say good-bye to someone who looks like your loved one. But the physical proof — the recognizable person that was your mom or dad — is gone or not whole or not recognizable. Your mind can't accept it, even though your heart knows it. You know their spirit has gone to Heaven, but it's hard to say good-bye. You will find your own way to say good-bye in your own time.
You may feel sick when you think about his or her broken body. Your imagination might even carry you to new and scary depths and unspeakable images. You will be afraid to ask what happened because the answers might be worse than what you imagined. You'll torture yourself wondering if they felt pain, if they suffered, if they knew what was happening. They didn't. In the same way your brain doesn't register pain immediately when you break your arm, your mom or dad didn't know pain in their last moments of life on this earth.
You may have strange dreams or nightmares about your mom or dad being alive somehow, trapped in a pocket of the wreckage of the building or stranded or lost in some remote location after parachuting out of the plane before it crashed. They may call to you in your dream to come find them. You will wake up with such hope and determination, only to have the clouds of reality gather and rain fresh tears of exasperation and sadness on your face. These dreams are your subconscious self trying to make sense out of what your conscious self already knows.
You will think about the last things you said to each other. Were they loving words or actions? Did we speak sharply to each other? Were we too sleepy or rushed to even have one last look at each other's faces? Rest easy. Their last thoughts were of you — the all of who you are — not the Tuesday morning, Sept. 11, you. And they were happy thoughts, all in a jumble of emotions so deep they are everlasting.
Everyone you know will cry fresh tears when they see you. People will try to feed you even though you know it all tastes like cardboard. They want to know what you think, what you feel, what you need. But you really don't know. You may not know for a very long time. And it will be an even longer amount of time before you can imagine your life without your mom or dad.
Some people, working through their own grief, will want to talk to you about the catastrophe, the aftermath, the rescue and recovery, or the actions that will be taken by our nation. Others will whisper as you walk by, "Her dad was killed in the attack on the World Trade Center," or "His mom was in the plane that crashed into the Pentagon," or "His dad was one of the firefighters who died when the buildings collapsed." This new identity might be difficult for you. Sometimes you will want to say to the whisperers, "Yes, that was my Dad. We are so proud of him. I miss him like crazy!" But sometimes you will want to fade into the background, wanting to anonymously grieve in your own way, in your own time, without an audience.
When those who loved your mom or dad talk with you, cry with you or even scream with frustration at the unfairness of it, you don't have to make sense of it all. Grief is a weird and winding path with no real destination and lots of switchbacks. Look on grief as a journey — full of rest stops, enlightening sites and potholes of differing depths of rage, sadness and despair. Just realize that you won't be staying forever at one stop. You will eventually move on to the next. And the path will become smoother, but it may never come to an end.
Ask the people who love you and who knew and loved your mom or dad to help you remember the way they lived — not the way they died. You need stories about your mom or dad from their friends, co-workers and your family. These stories will keep your mom or dad alive and real in your heart and mind for the rest of your life. Listen carefully to the stories. Tell them. Write them. Record them. Post them online. The stories will help you remember.
The stories will help you make decisions about your life — help you become the person you were meant to be. Just as a stronger nation will rise out of the grisly cinders and steel skeletal remains of buildings and airplanes, so will you be a stronger person. These events will shape your life in many different ways. You will wonder if you'll ever be safe again. You will. Our nation will wage a mighty war on terrorism. You will be protected. You can still believe in the future — in your future.
Please know that we are with you — holding you in our hearts, in our minds and in our prayers.

Losers I'm thinking about doing something my husband suggested and setting up my losers page in blog format. That way, I wouldn't have to do html every time I wanted to put up a new loser, and people would be allowed to comment on losers. And since blog assigns a number to each entry, I could archive them by name like I'm doing now.

New Poem This poem was written by Sarah Ingram, a lady at my father's church, about the terrorist attacks.
September 11, 2001
Cowards hiding behind innocents
Use them to strike their deadly blows.
They leave us all without defense,
Helplessly watching as blood flows.
What was a stately monument
Now collapsed in rubble heap.
Our sense of safety now is bent;
No longer can we, peaceful, sleep.
The terrorists have had their say;
They made horrific impact here.
They caused a devastating day,
Attacking what we hold so dear:
Our freedom to live as we choose,
Our confidence we can exist
In harmony we now do lose.
But at whom do we shake our fist?
We cannot strike out in blind hate--
We do not know who is to blame.
Much now is done, but much too late--
Our peace of mind's gone up in flame.
What can we do in frustration
Against unnamed, unnumbered foe?
We seek our source of salvation
And down upon our knees we go.
We pray for God to intervene
Within the savage hearts of men,
And give us solace now unseen
And heal the bitter souls again.

Annoying Spam It started out as repeated ads for a book. Then, with the terrorists attacks occuring this week, the spam messages become solicitations to hear the author on the radio, and to send out bogus Nostradamus prophecies. Then, other people on the extremely long list of people he has been spamming started replying to these messages to everyone he sent the message out to, instead of just to this guy. I tried sending out a message to just him with no response. I finally sent out a "Reply All" message asking everyone to stop spamming me and to advise them to complain to his service provider. The only reply I got to that was a complaint that I was just sending out messages to innocent people who were also pissed, to write the original author only, and to just dump it to my delete box. I tried emailing him, and I would have only written him only if other people hadn't started butting in and emailing me as well.
If I were ever under the slightest inclination to ever read a book by this guy, that inclination would be gone now. As it is, I'm prepared to launch a complaint to his service provider and never buy any book he has written or will write in the future.

Terrorist Attacks I'm sure everyone is by now aware of the attack that has been made on several of America's important buildings this morning. This is a horrible incident, and I'm appalled at the amount of damage that has been done. I'm hurt when I think of the people who's lives were ended, and those that were injured, and it sickens me to think that some people, namely Palestinians, are celebrating this traumatic event. I would like to ask everyone, regardless of their religious believes, to keep these people, their families, and those working at the scenes in their hearts and minds. I have already lit five candles in honor of these people: white for the souls of the deceased, blue to remind us to look skyward for help, black for maturity, wisdom, and to signify the darkness overshadowing this event, red to send strength to our leaders, and pink for healing and love.

What Microsoft Doesn't Want You To Know Everyone that has Windows on their computer, which comprises a good number of people, I know, needs to check out the webpage Microsoft's Really Hidden Files. Here's a quote from the summary:
This site tells you where to find these hidden files and how to delete them from your system. Why Microsoft keeps, needs, and hides this information is anyone's guess.
There are folders on your computer that Microsoft has tried hard to keep secret. Within these folders you will find two major things: Microsoft Internet Explorer has been logging all of the sites you have ever visited -- even after you've cleared your cache, and Microsoft's Outlook and Outlook Express has been logging all of your e-mail correspondence -- even after you've erased them from your trash bin. (This also includes all incoming and outgoing e-mail attachments.) And believe me, that's not even the half of it.

DSL Daryl found out today that my dad can get DSL from Bellsouth. Excited, of course, he called Bellsouth to find out what we can do to get hooked up. They said we can't get DSL. Why? No one could tell us. We just weren't "in the system" or some such rubbish. My dad lives less than a mile down the street from us and they can get it. We live in one of the two large apartment complexes, on the same street as the other large apartment complex, and we can't get it. How much sense does this make? Pardon me while I go bang my head on the wall...

High Speed I'm sitting at the downtown Nashville Public Library right now at a public computer and lusting after the oh-so-fast high speed connection. How depressing. This is what I get for living out in the sticks where there's no cable or DSL available. Oh and as a side note, the guy next to me must have bathed in his colone and I'm having to breath through my mouth to keep from passing out from the fumes. Seriously. It's making me sick. Ugh. Time to try my psychic powers of suggestion. "Leave... leave now... " Damn. It's not working. I think I'm going to die.
Oh, and on another side note, my car is working again! It turned out that the new filter our mechanic put in on my Saturn was... well... crap. As soon as a little stress was put on it, it burst out both sides and all the fluid gushed out. He said that when he was working on my car, thinking that it was a bad hose, that he put new fluid in and had his son turn on the car to see where it was leaking out. When his son turned on the car, he quickly discovered that it was the filter when it came spraying out of my car and gave him a transmission fluid bath. When I heard about this I cracked up. I wish I could've seen it. Anyway, we got it an official Saturn filter and now all's well.

Phone Fun! What does your phone number spell? Find out at Phonetic.com! I had too much fun with this. I guess I'm just easily amused.
My Car broke down yesterday. I was driving up a hill, gave it a little gas, and suddenly it slipped into neutral and wouldn't go anywhere. Wonderful. Just wonderful. We got it to the side of the road and got out and it's leaking this red stuff all over the road. It looked like my car is bleeding. General consensus seems to be that a hose burst and leaked out all my transmission fluid. Ick. I hope that's all it is.

Free Personal Astrology Report Visit Astrology.com for your free report. For the most accurate report, you need to know the exact time of your birth and the city where you were born. Of course, for a price, you can get an extended report, but the free sample is interesting as well. Mine was really pretty accurate. Try it, it's fun!
The Eyes of Tammy Faye My husband and I sat down at home and watched this wonderful documentary of Tammy Faye Bakker-Messner again today. I was struck for a second time by what a strong, incredible woman Tammy Faye is. If you have not seen this movie, stop by your local video store and check it out. I admire her for her strength as well as her viewpoint of embracing everyone, including gays. Visit Gay Today to read an interview with Tammy Faye. For more information on Tammy Faye, visit her website at TammyFaye.com.
